 Upsala IF - Boxning

Play it again Sam

Ugandan's headline Mayfair Sporting Club's show

Mickey Helliet, one of the youngest promoters in Britain, has his second show at the Café Royal tomorrow night. The Café Royal is, of course, home to the National Sporting Club, which was the bedrock of British Boxing in the early 1900’s.

Helliet’s philosophy on promoting is simple; “We put on 50/50 fights, when they step into the ring you don’t know who is going to win - I put on fights from a promoters point of view” said Mickey when we spoke last night.

On the card will be the two Ugandan’s that Mickey manages, both of whom made their professional debuts in November on Mickey’s last show here at the National Sporting Club. They both fought in the 2004 Olympics and have very good amateur pedigrees, I asked Mickey why he decided to sign them both.

“I saw Joseph at the Commonwealth Games in
Manchester
in 2002, he looked strong but made a lot of mistakes, his preparations looked all wrong but he still managed to win the silver medal. At the Olympics he looked better but lost in the first round. Given time he will improve, he’s getting better and better in the gym under the watchful eye of trainer James Cook, who I really rate as a trainer.”

Joseph, or Joey whom he now fights as, got to the final of the Light Heavyweight tournament in the Commonwealth Games before going down to a Nigerian 16-8 in the final after stopping his other two opponents. He lost on points to a Thai in the first round at the Olympics.

Helliet continued “Tomorrow will see him in a hard fight against Egbui (Abs) Ikeagwo, he has had three fights and although put in as an opponent in all three, he has won two and lost the other to a debatable decision. Ikeagwo will have a big height advantage especially over just four rounds.

The other lad Rocky was going to turn pro with Morgans Palle in
Denmark
, but I think he had a problem with his TV contract and it fell through. Rocky and Joseph were rooming together at the Olympics. When I boxed I didn’t like fighting southpaws and as a trainer never liked training them but watching Rocky he boxes how a southpaw should, he’s awkward and is fit and strong. Plus they look after each other and keep each other company.”

Sam or Rocky as he is known has an excellent amateur career and got to the quarter finals in the Olympic Games. He has also done a lot of boxing in
Sweden
, where he has a big following. As soon as the fight is over tomorrow night I have been asked to text the result over there and the report we put up will be translated for a Swedish website too.

“I don’t regret signing either of them one bit, they are lovely lads and very grateful to be here, they work very hard and could not have a better person to work with than James Cook, who I rate as one of the best trainers out there.

We can’t pad their records out, they have told me to just line them up the fights, and they will fight anyone. Rocky is completely different to Joseph, Joseph is very confident and just wants to go and knock their blocks off.

We plan to run regular dinner shows, they are a brilliant way to bring fighters along and gives them a good grounding to launch their career. I know I can get them regular fights.”

The card definitely looks entertaining tomorrow and at least two or three of them could run in line with Mickey’s thoughts of not knowing the winner when the contenders step into the ring.

“Rukundo versus Long will see boxer against puncher, it should be an interesting contest, Vegas versus Igeagwo will be one hundred miles an hour from the start, not sure how long that one will last, it could possibly be a real slugfest” added Heliet who seems really excited about tomorrow’s card.

“I am really looking forward to the fights; for the boxing fan it will be a cracking night. I think two or three of the fights will be memorable fights that the fans will remember for a long time. I don’t normally get excited about the boxing on my own shows, but this time I want to get everything done so that I can enjoy the boxing myself”

Mickey certainly knows what he wants from his shows and is confident he can put on a great show that the paying punters will remember. We wish him all the best for the future and look forward to bringing you the news from the fights tomorrow.
